Dispelling the Stereotype of Age: Older People Are Not Past Their Sell-By Date!

There is a horrible stereotype that, by the time you reach the age of 70, you are past your sell-by date and have already lived your life. Countless incredible seniors are going above and beyond to prove this assumption wrong.

Take Bristol athlete, Anne Dockery, for example. At the age of 55, she decided to take up running and now, at 71 years young, she competes as a distance runner and a triathlete with her coach, Chris, who is 78, by her side. It would seem that the other cliché is a lot more accurate – you are only as old as you allow yourself to be!

Here are some tips on how to extend that wondrous feeling of youthfulness well into your 'old age'.

Refuse to act your age

Adopt a more youthful approach to your daily routine. Make an effort to attend social gatherings and embrace new experiences. There will always be something that you have never done before, and the thrill of trying something new and different is often enough to leave you feeling 20 years younger than you actually are. It can also help to associate and spend time with people of all ages – not just individuals who are of a similar age to you.

Finally, strive to be more spontaneous and, if finances allow, travel as much as you possibly can!

Look after yourself

The healthier you are, the younger you will both look and feel. Make self-care a top priority and strive to exercise at least three times a week, get seven – nine hours of sleep every night, eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet, and stay mobile at every opportunity. For instance, take the stairs instead of the lift.

Nurture your wellbeing

Mental health is just as important as physical health when it comes to dispelling stereotypes about age. Reduce stress, strive to be more mindful in your everyday life, build up and maintain a solid support system of family and friends, and set aside plenty of time for yourself to do the things that you enjoy.

Finally, most importantly of all, seek out professional help when it is required, especially if you have a family history of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Never be ashamed to rope in a private live-in companion or some extra home help when you need it!
