Finding Gratitude in Trying Times
It is much easier to feel grateful when life is going your way. Unfortunately, when the challenges hit and you are diagnosed with a disease like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, feelings of gratitude are in short supply – and understandably so. This is especially true during the festive season which can often prove to be a particularly difficult and emotional time.
The good news is that it is possible to be grateful even during those hard times. It can even prove to be a wonderful way in which to find peace and acceptance. Below is some helpful advice to take to heart.
Work on changing your mind-set
Instead of feeling down-hearted and demotivated, try to view the situation with the knowledge that everybody faces challenges – and that this particular challenge is the one that you are faced with for now. This attitude change can promote acceptance and aid in generating hope and determination towards overcoming the obstacles in your way.
Try to find the silver lining
This can be especially difficult when you are faced with the prospect of a long-term illness. However, as the old saying goes, ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. You may need to look a bit harder – but it will always be there. For example, you might see more of your beloved children and grandchildren going forward as they will be more eager to check on you. If you will be welcoming a live-in companion, you will have someone to share meals and your stories with. What a great opportunity to make a new friend!
Learn to live in the moment
Before being diagnosed with a disease, you may have been treating each day as a given. However, following the diagnosis, you are likely to learn what it really means to live in the moment and treat each day as a gift with limitless opportunities to make them count. Adopt this attitude and gratitude is sure to naturally follow suit.
Spend time with loved ones
You are certain to feel grateful about the existence and happiness of your loved ones even if you are unable to feel grateful about your own life. Live vicariously through your grandson’s giggles and your daughter’s successes, and savour the time spent with those whom you treasure the most.
