Springtime Activities for Seniors
After a seemingly endless winter, the smell of spring is finally in the air. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your elderly relative outside for some exercise and some healthy vitamin D! Did you know that vitamin D deficiency is actually frighteningly common in seniors? Some of the first signs of this problem include weak muscles, mood swings, sudden weight gain, fatigue and digestive issues.
In an effort to help brighten their mood and help them stock up on this all-important vitamin, here are some great suggestions for springtime activities that are ideal for the elderly.
Fishing
Fishing is the ultimate outdoor activity for seniors as it requires minimal mobility and promises to keep them outdoors for much longer stretches of time. It’s also a wonderful way in which to bond with family and friends, all the while enjoying the best of what Mother Nature has to offer.
Long Walks
The floral-tinged spring air, the balmy breeze, the blossoming trees and the scurrying little critters – there are so many reasons why a long walk during spring and summer is so enjoyable. Who needs any more reason to head outdoors with their live in companion or family members?
Go Out with the Kids
Whether their granddaughter is playing a netball tournament or their toddler grandson fancies a trip to the park, the kids present elderly relatives with plenty of opportunity to venture outside and get some sun. Take them along for the outing!
Swimming
Swimming is a highly recommended form of exercise for older adults as it places minimal stress and strain on the joints, but still gets the heart pumping. If your elderly relative is willing and able to take a dip in the pool, why not consider signing them up for some aqua aerobics classes at the local gym?
Have a Picnic
This is a lovely activity for the entire family to enjoy. Not only will it get your elderly relative off of the couch or out of bed for a little while, but it will also get the kids away from the gaming console and computer! Don’t forget to snap some photos so that you can hold onto those special family moments forever.
