Staying in touch with elderly relatives despite a need for social distancing

We live in trying times and our elderly relatives are at the greatest risk of falling victim to a virus that is relentless when it comes to seniors over the age of 65, and those who are immuno-compromised. This is the reason why social distancing is so very important right now. The question is, how can you stay in touch with your elderly loved ones despite the restrictions regarding face to face visits? Here are some guidelines.

Communicate regularly with their caregiver

This is essential regardless of whether your loved one receives independent elderly care at home or is living in an assisted living facility. You can check in regarding their physical and psychological wellbeing, and also enquire what special precautions are being taken to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Make doubly certain that all of the guidelines outlined by the WHO and the CDC are being strictly implemented.

Video chat

Is your loved one still of sound mind? Then perhaps they can learn how to use a simple device, such as a tablet or an uncomplicated smartphone, that will enable video calling? If so, wonderful! You can still technically ‘see' each other during this lonely, uncertain period. However, if not, you may want to request that their caregiver assists you with this. He or she can facilitate video chats between the two of you, or simply send through some video footage of your relative every now and again for improved peace of mind.

If none of this is possible, consider writing a ‘letter' to your loved one and asking their caregiver to read it aloud.

Reminisce with the family

The entire family is likely to be missing your relative and feeling the effects of lockdown and social distancing. Set up a mass video chat and sit together and reminisce about the good old days. You can exchange fond memories of your elderly loved one and maybe even share some of your favourite photographs from your family photo albums. These chats are certain to lift the spirits and remind you all that this way of life is temporary.

It’s better to be safe than sorry

Most importantly, don’t allow yourself to forget the reasons behind having to keep your distance. Ultimately, it’s your elderly relative's health and wellbeing that matter more than anything else! You have to be overly cautious now but rest assured that you will be together again soon enough.
