Travel and Flying with Dementia
Many families with a loved one who has been diagnosed with dementia will be pleased to discover that, with a bit of planning and strategising, their relative will often still be able to join them on their travels. However, travelling with dementia can prove difficult. Here is how to navigate your way to a smoother, less stressful experience at the airport and on board the flight.
The airport
With complicated security procedures and queues that seem to go on forever, making your way through the airport can present a challenge for even the most frequent of flyers. For a person suffering from dementia, it can be extremely exhausting and confusing, even if they have their family by their side. As a result, it is recommended that you arrive at the airport well in advance of your flight. You will also need to speak directly to security officials and explain to them that your relative is suffering from cognitive problems, especially if they are having trouble following instructions or answering any questions posed to them at security checks. Also, considering the sheer size of most airports, it is essential that you keep an eye on your relative at all times to avoid them getting lost.
The plane
The best thing to do the moment that you board the plane is to have a word with the cabin crew about your loved one and his or her condition. Most will be more than accommodating and do everything in their power to make them comfortable and ensure that they feel safe.
Keep in mind that many people with dementia will experience anxiety during the flight. This can often be remedied by bringing along noise-cancelling headphones and a few of their favourite snacks to help distract them. Remember, if you are travelling on a long-haul flight, it is always wise to travel with another person or family member who can assist in caring for your relative with dementia.
Once you land, make your way to your accommodation as quickly as you can and allow your loved one plenty of time to rest and recover from the journey.
By keeping the aforementioned tips in mind, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to bring your relative along with you on your travels. Expect to have to endure a few obstacles along the way, but know that it will all be worth it upon arriving at your destination.
