Showing Gratitude to Carers at Christmas time
Caring for another individual is an incredibly selfless, and often thankless, act. Christmas is a time for happiness, celebration, and reflection, as well as the perfect time to show gratitude to those who care for us or our beloved senior relatives. Here are a few creative ways to go about it.
With words
Sit down with the carer and share a cup of coffee. Speak from the heart and tell them why you are so grateful for everything that they do. Hearing words of affirmation and knowing that you are doing a great job is enough to make anyone’s year!
With a celebration
Why not host a small, intimate celebration in the caregiver’s honour? It could be a little tea party with sugary Christmas cookies and finger food, or a hearty festive season feast. Be sure to make a toast and say a few words of thanks.
With a recommendation
Finding a new job is a daunting prospect for anyone! Even though the caregiver might not be doing that any time soon, it is wonderful to know that it shouldn’t be as difficult as expected when they do. A positive recommendation or referral goes a long way and is certain to be greatly appreciated.
With a letter
While it is possible to have a conversation and give thanks, a letter is a special item that a caregiver can hold onto and cherish for many years to come. It will put a smile on their face the first time they read it and every single time thereafter.
With a gift
Think a fragrant bunch of flowers, a gift voucher for a day at the spa, or a grocery voucher. Gifts are lovely gestures that show you care. You could even consider the gift of time - offer your caregiver an extra day off so that they can enjoy time for themselves.
With your help
Offer to pick up the groceries, run an errand, take your senior relative out for the day, or do some of the housework so that they can take a well-deserved break and rest or do something that they enjoy.
With inclusivity
Invite your senior relative’s caregiver to join your household’s Christmas celebration not as the paid help, but as a member of the family. Feeling included and welcomed into the family can make all of the hard work and sacrifices worth it.
