Everything You Need to Know about the Flu Vaccine
Many people think that the flu just means getting the sniffles and spending a few days in bed. However, for the elderly, it can prove to be a lot more dangerous. In fact, the flu causes a number of deaths every year in the UK, and many of those who lose their lives to the easily-spread virus are people over the age of 65.
The great news is that it is possible to reduce your, and your senior loved ones' chances of contracting the flu in the first place with the help of the annual flu vaccine. Here is what you need to know about it, as well as when the best time is to get it in order to maximise its effectiveness.
When are you most likely to contract the flu?
The flu is at its peak during wintertime in the UK with most people falling ill during December and January.
Who should get the flu vaccine?
The short answer is ‘everyone’. However, it is especially important to get the flu shot if you are -
- 65 years old or older
- if you are pregnant
- if you reside in a nursing home where the virus spreads relentlessly
- if you suffer from a serious medical condition or weakened immune system
- if you are a live in carer for an elderly individual whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill and pass the virus on to them
The elderly and caregivers often qualify to receive the flu vaccine for free from the NHS.
When is the best time to get the flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine is most effective if you get it in autumn. The months of October and November are ideal and provide your body with plenty of time to prepare for flu season. It is said to take your body up to two weeks to fully respond to the vaccine and to provide you with the appropriate level of immunity. Therefore, while it is possible to get the vaccine after that time, it may not be as effective. Rather late than not at all, though!
Remember – the flu vaccine is only designed to protect you during the upcoming flu season. There are countless strains of the virus and it is forever changing. As such, you will need to get a new flu vaccine every year in order to enhance your protection.
